In the early nineties, when shoegaze was still an unnamed fever dream, Lush’s 1990 album Gala arrived like a telegram from another dimension. It stitched together EPs and stray singles into something greater than its parts, a collection of shimmering guitars and half-whispered revelations that seemed to hover above the clamor of the decade. One heard not only the pulse of youth, but also the ache of its transience. In its haze lay both celebration and elegy; a modern age of distortion and reverie.
Originally released in 1990 as Lush’s introduction to the US and Japanese markets, Gala compiled the band’s earliest releases —Scar (1989), Mad Love (1990), and Sweetness and Light (1990) — in reverse chronological order. The collection also featured two extras: a cover of ABBA’s Hey Hey Helen and the extended Robin Guthrie mix of Scarlet.
For the first time since its debut, Gala is back in print. The 35th Anniversary Edition arrives November 14, 2025, featuring brand-new Kevin Vanbergen remasters, deluxe artwork designed by Chris Bigg with original v23 imagery (Vaughan Oliver & Bigg), and a new biography penned by Jenny Hval.
The Gala reissue follows the 2023 remastered editions of Lush’s studio albums Spooky, Split, and Lovelife. In 2024, Lush also partnered with the Criterion Channel on A Far From Home Movie, a short film by bassist Phil King, created in memory of drummer Chris Acland. The film compiles candid Super-8 footage from Lush’s tours between 1992 and 1996. Revisit the film here.
The Gala reissue arrives as Lush frontwoman Miki Berenyi prepares for her final North American tour with the Miki Berenyi trio, underscoring the lasting impact of these songs more than three decades on.
