REAPER ON RED’s latest video for “Victory Over the Sun” emerges as a haunting, dystopian vision —a fiery hymn drawn from their newly unveiled sophomore album, Doom Daze. The duo, Robert and Carla Cherry, continue to delve deep into the marrow of dark psych rock, analogue electronic mysticism, and post-punk’s stark intensity, crafting ritualistic melodies for collapsing worlds and futures on fire.
A searing palette of blood reds and abyssal blacks, the video—directed by Michael Sweeney—renders a sun turned malevolent, transforming the giver of life into an existential threat. Here, a shadowy figure moves in pursuit beneath stark iconography: hourglasses, skyscrapers, and ancient hieroglyphs all bleed together, drawing from the mythos of Sekhmet, daughter of the Egyptian sun god Ra, who exacted vengeance upon those who disturbed nature’s delicate balance.
Robert Cherry describes the genesis of the song:
“The music’s dark swagger conjured a lyric that imagines a future in which the sun’s intense heat has made the earth’s surface largely uninhabitable during the day. In response, those who naturally come alive at night are best suited to evolve and survive as nocturnal hunters.”
As the track oscillates through sleek synth textures and shivering guitars, the vocals drip with sanguine over a melody laced with gothic allure, illuminating an atmosphere thick with psychedelia and ritualistic visions. Carla Cherry deepens the concept further:
“It’s also a subversion of a sun-chasing pop song. It compels you to think more deeply about the state of our environment by allowing the subconscious to delve back into ancient memory in order to connect with the present and envision the path of the future.”
