San Francisco death-rock duo The Tunnel emerges from gloom with “Ice Fog,” the latest single from their ominously titled EP, They Died Tomorrow. Bass and electronics conjurer Sam Black and guitarist-vocalist-visual artist Jeff Wagner deliver a chilling audio dispatch from the edge of darkness—an unsettling yet compelling guide through the uncertainties of 2025.
Built around Wagner’s spectral vocal incantations, reminiscent of Peter Murphy’s ghostly dramatics, “Ice Fog” evokes nocturnal anxieties of vampirism, insomnia, and isolation. Black’s minimalist but menacing rhythms pulse like machinery beneath Wagner’s plaintive guitar melodies—each note like a mournful procession through dreams lost in twilight haze.
The track conjures the eerie hush of dawn’s first mist, cloaking listeners in a seductive yet sinister embrace. Shades of Tones on Tail’s sophisticated dark pop, the industrial pulse of Big Black, and Cocteau Twins’ Garland’s era witchcraft float through the composition. However, The Tunnel aren’t satisfied merely referencing influences; instead, they distill these elements into their own dark alchemy—perfectly crafted for those raised on the classic catalogs of Wax Trax!, TVT, or Play It Again Sam.
“The song has a modern terrorscape atmosphere, so it might seem strange that the video collages elements from nearly 100 years ago,” explains Jeff Wagner. “But those films are timeless. Struggling to live through dread is a common theme in our songs—now more than ever.”
Indeed, “Ice Fog” feels designed for the liminal instant when day surrenders fully to night, and familiar shapes dissolve into spectral mysteries. It’s an invitation to linger at the edge of uncertainty—alert, alive, and unafraid to embrace the darkness ahead.
