San Diego post-punk duo The Todds have unveiled their video for “Freedom is Slavery”. Formed in 2020, the new wave outfit started out quite differently as a three-piece with no set musical direction. Pared down to a duo, their sound quickly shaped up into a formidable force in old-school post-punk and darkwave. Incorporating synthesizers and drums with the ethos to produce music strictly with the kind of technology available before 1989.
The result of their efforts is a sound immersed in the warm reverb of the analog age, creating authentic music that feels like an unearthed gem from that shadowy period between 1983 and 1986, when the goth subculture was still in its infancy.
Their debut EP If You Seek Their Monument Look Around was released in May of 2021, and this latest track ‘Freedom is Slavery” is the first taste of their forthcoming new EP titled Orwellian, which is set to be released in late April of 2022.
The new single is a brooding dirge, with deep vocals presiding over plaintive synths and spiraling bass and drumbeats, perfectly making the sombre and gothic visuals culled from a silent film.
