Russia’s Twin Peaks finds themselves lost in the frozen wilderness in their spellbinding new video for “Wounded Stars”. Addressing the issues of growing up and re-examining personal values, director Olga Feona’s monochromatic masterpiece was gorgeously filmed in the Bryansk forests by Franco D’Alessandro. A haunting portrait of a small child’s experience playing in a bleak landscape, the video is visually stunning and illustrates the tune.
Despite being performed entirely in Russian, the emotions transcend all language barriers. This is a bittersweet symphony for a life that no longer exists. Frontman Konstantin Kirpu recalls the arduous filming process: “It was a cold autumn day, we froze pretty much and in the end, the battery on the camera even ran down from the cold.” An apt metaphor for frozen time, indeed.
Twin Peaks has seen a massive shift change over years since forming in Kotovsk in 2002. Initially started by Konstantin Kirpu (vox, guitars, lyrics) and drummer Denis Terekov, the band eventually rounded out their lineup with the talents of bassist Egor Tikhonov and keyboardist Dmitry Vasyatkin. Initially, Twin Peaks played hardcore punk and grunge, but they have since shifted their collective focus to a sound rooted more in post-punk and new wave. This song, in particular, has KINO meets Cure flavour—weaving a melancholy and wistful sound that evokes nostalgia for the 1980s and pre-pandemic pleasures, for love’s labours lost, for our bygone youth.
