Taking a bleak journey into the depths of sorrow and despair, Скубут [Skubut] gets extremely dark with “Акт самоубийства”, which translates from Russian into English as “Suicide.” The track examines hidden obsessions that unravel during the darkest night of the soul, realized alone in a bathroom, exsanguinated, while someone knocks on the door, too late to help.
The track is a seductive, penetrating spell: a deep exhale of dense droning mists built by an ominous, rumbling bleak bass line with icy synth. Its morbidity cascades through ethereal guitar reverb, charged by crispy claps and quick muffled percussive patterns, swaddled with morose, deep male vocals. It is a cathartic release of shame, guilt, and pain into the nocturnal subconscious desires of an eternal, haunted peace.
Cold, poignant, and filled with sorrow, Скубут blends icy minimalism ala Lebanon Hanover with the distinctive, intense melancholy and emotional turmoil of ‘doomer’ bands, like Ploho, She Past Away, and Molchat Doma.
Скубут is the post-punk moniker of a young Russian musician called Mikhail Shlepin, now based in Vienna, Austria.
Fittingly, the monochrome video was filmed in a cemetery – illustrating, quite literally, the final frontier. Although not explicit or violent in its imagery, there is a haunting quality that brings the song to a heavy emotional impact.
