Russian darkwave luminaries, Giant Waves, have unveiled their video for “Love is a Lie”, a track featured on their latest EP, ПРАВДА (Pravda), which translates into English as “Truth”.
The band, considered by many to be the most famous post-punk act from of Volgograd (the city better known to the world as Stalingrad), channels a brutal Nietzschean philosophical idea with the track, exclaiming:
“Here: love is a lie, God doesn’t care about us, and people are deaf to each other.”
The song itself is originally a Turquoise Fields era song by French Coldwave legends Little Nemo, with the new version by Giant waves being a collaboration with George Remier (who plays guitar on the track).
The style of video for “Love is a Lie” is Russian neo-noir, imbued with the atmosphere of the most depressive time of modern Russia – the 90s. With a typical criminal plot reflecting those times—an era where there was no place for sentimentality, and where profit and cynicism were paramount, placed above all in society. This is a bitter sarcasm in the context of which the entire song is recorded. The whole EP Pravda, as so as “Love is a Lie”, is a search for both truth and meaning, in a world that is strange and distorted, and often times a dark parody of itself.
