As always, Post-punk.com is excited to premiere an unsigned, completely underground, but absolutely brilliant new band, Brooklyn’s Second Still. The three piece coldwave outfit formed in early 2014 and have been playing steady shows ever since, gaining a devout following in NYC’s underground venues.
Deriving their name from the lead-off track from Modern Eon’s underrated Fiction Tales LP, Second Still have been busy perfecting their live show, recording several demos, and are at this very moment hard at work on their debut record, recorded by Hillary Johnson (Bell Hollow, The Prids). “Try Not To Hide” is their latest offering, the a-side of a two track digital single featured on the band’s Soundcloud page and ripe for release by any aspiring labels (hint hint). For the unfamiliar, their sound invokes the classic wave of la vague froide, combing the obscure French underground for only the best of influences. Fans of Tanit, Excès Nocturne, Pro Memoria, and of course, Garlands-era Cocteau Twins will find much to love in Second Still’s music. “Try Not To Hide” is an aggressive beast, chock full of heavy drum machine beats, hypnotic bass grooves, and enough chorus-drenched guitar to make Chameleons fans blush. Vocalist Suki San’s low, dreamy croon fills the gaps perfectly, enhancing the song’s tension before takeoff.
The band is currently relocating to L.A., but will be playing a handful of NYC shows before setting sail. Their next gig is this Friday, 10/16 at RiverGigs with The Foreign Resort. Details can be found here. In the interim, check out “Try Not To Hide,” and once you’re hooked, feel free to pick up their first demo release here.
