Post-Punk Stalwarts The Membranes Unveil “A Murmuration Of Starlings On Blackpool Pier”

Oldschool Mancunian post-punk stalwarts, the Membranes are soon releasing What Nature Gives…Nature Takes Away, the eighth studio album from the John Robb fronted band, who have been maintaining a constant momentum since reforming in 2010 at the encouragement of My Bloody Valentine.

Today we are premiering “A Murmuration Of Starlings On Blackpool Pier”, a song whose title worthy of being a cut on Pink Floyd’s UmmaGumma, while the music is being swept away with foreboding strings and sinister undertones augmented by gravelly vocals and an audio sample from a television or radio program.

About the song, John Robb explains:

“In an album with no typical tracks, “A Murmuration Of Starlings On Blackpool Pier”, is another aural adventure. The track is a dark brooding piece built around strings and it’s incessant gripping atmosphere paints a picture of the stunning clouds of birds flying in the sky ready to roost in the vending s above the grime and tat of the Blackpool sea front where Membranes grew up before moving to Manchester. The song contrasts the birds swirling euphoria with the human euphoria below in a piece of intense story telling that details the drink stained sex and tension below the piers and the promenades as the birds feathery ballet plays out.”

The track is from the band’s upcoming and already acclaimed ‘What Nature Gives…Nature Takes Away’ double album which takes the beauty and violence Nature as its main theme as it looks at the primal drives of human nature and the big themes of love, lust, sex and death in a collection of songs that ebb and flow over every side which represents a different season.

What Nature Gives…Nature Takes Away is set for release on June 7th via Cherry Red Records.
