There is something to decide
Hollowed out on the inside
Bricks of memory built
A cellular wall of survivor’s guilt
Northwestern US electronic shoegaze trio Darkswoon announces the birth of a new video: “Year of the Rat.” The song comes off their album Bloom Decay, out now via Icy Cold Records. The track’s eerie, atmospheric guitars and ethereal vocals border on dream pop, while layers of beats, haunting synth, and melodically-driven bass create a unique flavor touching on old-school goth with a modern edge.
“Year of the Rat” addresses karmic cycles and finding a way to break away from that cosmic hamster wheel. Vocalist Jana Cushman’s strong yet dreamlike voice, reminiscent of Annie Lennox, anchors us in these whirling, flashing wormhole journeys – resulting in one of the most compelling videos and songs of 2022.
The clip, filmed by Darkswoon and directed by Ion Wray Media, is a dazzling journey through the veil of the spirit world and that of mortals. Images flash through rapidly, as if dream moments; electricity pulses through the mind as Jana’s figure acts as a channeling medium.

Composer Jana Cushman (vocals, guitar) initially began Darkswoon as a solo project, but came into full realization when Rachel Ellis (keys and beats) and Norah Lynn (bass) joined the band in 2017. Their debut LP ‘Bind‘ came out in 2019.
