Philadelphia Synth-Pop Duo Korine Raise the Night With The Melancholic “Cruel”

I’M ALIVE IN YOUR TOMB/I’M MAKING YOU SIGH/NOW THE FEELING IS GONE/JUST LIKE VENUS YOU SHINE/I’M ALONE IN THE WOODS WITH THE SPIRIT ENTWINED/AND I COULD BE CRUEL

Philadelphia synth-pop duo Korine lurk in the shadows with their brilliant new EP, The Night We Raise. The latest single, Cruel, is a macabre, moody masterpiece evoking the exquisite yin-yang of rage and bliss. The luxe accompanying video, directed by Max R. Holland, is a glorious goth dream with candles, masks and a dark shadowy woodland.

Members Trey Frye and Morgy Ramone deliver music with soul and heart – they manage to walk that fine line of the human experience and describe all its beautiful light and darkness, blended together in poetic harmony. They’re introspective, grounded, and yet manage to maintain an optimism; their synths float magnificently in the ether. Korine weaves new wave nostalgia with a modern pop sensibility, juxtaposing upbeat rhythms against melancholy lyrics. They evoke the uneasiness of society and the collective drive to balance the divine masculine and feminine.

Korine has been a favourite of Post-Punk for some time now, making our Current Synthpop Acts You Should Know list earlier this year. The Night We Raise is a masterpiece; it is easily one of 2020’s best synthpop albums.

The Night We Raise is out on vinyl and cassette, via Born Losers Records (US) and Data Airlines (FR). Other Voices Records in Russia will be exclusively handling the CD.
