Toronto’s Odonis Odonis have been slowly, but steadily unveiling tracks from their upcoming album Spectrums, due out on October 15th via Felte. With each drop, the duo paint an eclectic portrait of an album created during lockdown: anger, frustration, and fear laid down on tape, each track exploring different, yet complementary sounds that run the gamut from Wax Trax to DFA. Their sixth track reveal from Spectrums finds the band dipping their toes into throbbing electronic dance punk, complete with complementary black and white visuals. Watch and listen to “Shadow Play” below:
“Shadow Play” is a quick, powerful blast of electropunk energy, with relentless grooves, heady atmosphere, and driving percussion building layer upon layer into a deep electronic frenzy. Dean Tzeno’s vocals are treated with a series of effects that compliment the cacophony, throbbing alongside the rhythms in an affecting monotone. After a series of darker, more visceral tracks, “Shadow Play” flirts a little more openly with the dance floor and hits like The Faint with razor-sharp teeth, or even recalls under sung UK band Detachments. “Is that you, is that you,” Tzenos calls out into the ether as the the track builds to a quick, but satisfying conclusion. Clocking in at just over two minutes long, “Shadow Play” is a groove you can live in forever, demanding repeat listens and begging for another taste of chaos.
The video, created by Tzenos and featuring footage shot by Adam Seward and Juliana Carlevaris, builds upon Odonis Odonis’ live presence, with a series of flashing lights, circular logos, and flames casting shadows over Denholm Whale and Tzenos. The band has just announced a series of North American tour dates to support Spectrums, including a prominent appearance on this year’s Cold Waves IX festival in Chicago alongside Front 242, Stabbing Westward, and Clipping.
