Nothing is Permanent — Philadelphia Post-Punk Trio DRILL Debut Video for “Within Reason”

“NO GUITARS!”

That’s the only rule for Philadelphia trio DRILL (Sonam Parikh, Gavin Perez-Canto, and Nina Ryser). This captivating hybrid effortlessly blends the raw energy of punk, the avant-garde spirit of post-punk, the dissonant vibes of no-wave, and the infectious pop melodies. Picture DRILL as that cool friend who leans in, inviting you to hit that play button, nodding as you clasp your hands over the orange foam on your Walkman headphones while you melt into the irreverent vibe of the music. DRILL’s uunique onomatopoeic synth patterns intertwine with drumbeats that pay homage to both hardcore and bachata rhythms. Amidst the cacophony, Nina Ryser’s basslines cut through with a smooth precision, adding a touch of buttery brilliance to the mix. Channeling Delta 5, Nina Hagen, Bush Tetras and The Slits, this catchy banger will have you fending off scurvy and going bananas on the dance floor alike.

This fun bop comes replete with a delightful DIY video from the band of a multitude of people devouring the fruits of our desires. Watch below:

Alas, over before they ever really began, DRILL was already operating in the past tense with their first (and last) full-length LP, Permanent.

In a bold and adventurous move, this intrepid trio channeled their creative energy into crafting eight electrifying songs. Recorded live in a mere two days by the skillful hands of Lucas Knapp in a gritty Philly basement, it’s as if the band has taken a page from Pink Floyd’s playbook – but instead of fading into obscurity, they’re boldly delivering their resignation letter right to your desk and then setting it all alight in a blaze of glory.

With Permanent, DRILL has bestowed upon us a resounding and delightfully freaky final missive that traverses the spectrum from artful noise pop to laser-focused hardcore punk. This is no ordinary swan song; it’s a triumphant (and unforgettable) last hurrah! Though the album is titled Permanent, everything about it is about a series of goodbyes. Ultimately, even the insert instructs you not to be too precious with it: it contains instructions which direct you to fold the insert into a boat and sail it away.  Cheeky as always, the band says goodbye in the only way they know how – the last line of it reads: Remember: Nothing is permanent.

Permanent comes out in early March via Philadelphia label Abandon Everything Records.
