New Order’s Transmissions Episode 4 with Stephen Morris

Ahead of their “Definitive Edition” release of their 1981 debut album MovementNew Order has announced a video series called Transmissions, a documentary style series of interviews with all four original members of the band chronicling their transition from Joy Division to New Order, and the creation of their first album after the suicide of front-man Ian Curtis—which occurred just as the band were set to embark on their first North American tour.

Transmissions – Episode 4

Episode 4 includes an interview with drummer Stephen Morris on the recording of Movement, where he discusses his experience of recording the album and playing live in the aftermath of Ian Curtis’ death.

“Who wants to come and see the band that used to be Joy Division? Nobody,” jokes Morris as he recalls the band’s formative period.

“I don’t know who to feel sorry for. Us or the audience. There was a couple of gigs in America where I’m sure I heard someone say, ‘Which one’s the dead guy?’”

Morris also discusses how in deciding on a vocalist, he recognized that Bernard Sumner was “quite good” because he sang in “a half-hearted, disinterested way that was quite charming”.
