Neapolitan Darkwave Duo Varg I Veum Debut Video for “The Dim Glass”

Naples-based darkwave duo Varg I Veum, featuring Alessandra Policella and Michele Mozzillo of Hapax, have released their new single and video, “The Dim Glass,” from their self-titled album, available through Swiss Dark Nights. Their music, a distinctive blend of coldwave’s atmospheric sounds and medieval folk motifs, creates a melancholic auditory experience with powerful electronics and resonant vocal lines.

Alessandra’s expertise in Germanic philology enriches the songwriting, drawing from Old Norse poetry and English romanticism to craft lyrics that reimagine ancient verses in a modern, introspective context. “The Dim Glass” explores the complexities of personal struggle and introspection, using metaphors of wolves and ravens to depict the tension between primal instincts and higher reasoning. The song subtly addresses the dangers of ignoring inner truths and the pitfalls of self-delusion.

The spectacular video, a creation of Elio de Filippo and Jessica Squilante from Studio Nubes, is presented in a striking black-and-white palette, skillfully interlacing with the song’s underlying messages. Its visual style, redolent of Maya Deren’s surrealist masterpiece Meshes of the Afternoon, traverses a landscape of psychedelic elements and nature scenes, each hinting at a looming sense of foreboding. This artistic approach not only complements but also deepens the song’s impact, resulting in a visually enthralling experience that harmonizes with its hauntingly melodious tune.
