Rue Oberkampf, the underground electronic music project spearheaded by DJ/producer duo Julia de Jouy and Oliver Maier, resides at the vibrant intersection of electronic subcultures. Their sound isn’t merely a blend of genres but a sharp synthesis of the abrasive energy of early industrial, the relentless drive of techno, and the melancholic undercurrent of darkwave. What truly sets them apart is their talent for interlacing these elements into a compelling, hypnotic experience that resonates across a diverse audience. De Jouy’s vocals, raw with emotional intensity, glide over pulsating rhythms and ominous synths, spinning narratives filled with yearning and disquiet.
Now, the Munich-based darkwave pair presents their latest release—a double single titled Soror Aeterna, accompanied by atmospheric dance visuals from filmmaker Shai Peleg. Soror Aeterna explores the timeless theme of sisterhood and unbreakable inner strength, layering ethereal melodies over dark, foreboding soundscapes. The result is a work of haunting emotional depth that retains the pulsating energy at the heart of Rue Oberkampf’s sonic identity.
Soror grips you right from the first note, a high-octane rush that pulls no punches. Its intensity promises a ride through the darker corners of electronic music, where things don’t merely linger—they thrive. The video, featuring the dynamic talent of dancers Gal Zusmanovich and Sahar Vegh, perfectly matches the track’s frenetic energy. They move like live wires, bodies reflecting the pulse of the beat as they dance through stunning bursts of light, adding layers of raw emotion to the rhythm. The stark contrast of the rapid movements against the shifting glow only amplifies the music’s relentless pace, creating a sense of urgency that grabs hold and refuses to release as light, motion, and sound collide to create something that feels both urgent and unstoppable.
Both songs are featured on the duo’s forthcoming EP, ESSENZ, set to release on November 1, 2024, via Young and Cold Records. The EP is available for pre-order on vinyl and CD.
“With ESSENZ we wanted to give each song its own dedicated visual journey, offering a personal and immersive experience for our listeners,” says the band. “We’re fascinated by how our music inspires other artists, and we feel incredibly lucky to have workedwith such talented individuals who brought their own visions to life in these videos.”
