Mueran Humanos Channel Ethereal Eroticism in “El Lago”

Just last year, Berlin-based post-punk duo Mueran Humanos released their long-awaited third LP, Hospital Lullabies. With the world in flux and live shows at a complete standstill, the project, consisting of Carmen Burguess and Tomás Nochteff, have shifted gears and begun work on a new, as-yet-untitled LP. We’re honored to premiere the video for their brand new track, “El Lago.” Watch below:

The track is powerful mid-tempo workout, with deep, distorted bass and bright, ethereal synths. There’s a duality to “El Lago” that is equal parts erotic as it is menacing, which has always been a key component of Mueran Humanos’ sound. Exploring sensuality in art can sometimes yield mixed results, but the duo continue to strike a sublime balance between beauty and dissonance in their music. “El Lago” is a hit through and through, a simple, affecting groove and heavenly melodies to get lost in forever.

The video, directed by Martin Borini, is a performance video of sorts, featuring Burguess and Nochteff playing in all-white in a smoke filled room with the occasional splash of lime green lighting. Immediately, we’re reminded of The Cure’s stark and unsettling videos for “Other Voices” and “Primary” here, but Mueran Humanos contrast these ghost-ridden hues with palpable eroticism, their infectious chemistry as much a pleasure to watch on screen as it is to listen to.

The clip is part of a more long-form project that the band contributed to the Pop Kultur Festival, which aired online in late August. The full fifteen-minute piece, entitled “Laguna Cementerio,” was constructed as an ode to the fanzine; a collage of sound and vision featuring Argentinean actress Sofia Gala and set to a handful of experimental interludes from vaults. The piece is a fitting reminder that Mueran Humanos has always been an art band first, and a rock band second.  Watch the entire piece below, and stay tuned for what we’re sure will be a fruitful year to come for Mueran Humanos.
