Montreal-based synth musician and chanteuse Laura Krieg has just released her second full-length album, Crépuscule, via Detriti Records. The album taps into the celebrated tradition of dancefloor-ripe minimal synth projects of the early 1980s, complete with layers of cold synthesized bliss and deep electronic percussion, with Krieg’s detached, yet passionate vocals, sung in both French and English, cutting through the electronic cacophony. Fans of projects such as Trans-X, Deux, Linear Movement, and Hard Corps should find much to love throughout the album’s eight powerful tracks. The LP also features collaborations with Johny Couteau (co-songwriter on the title track as well as musical collaborator throughout), Xavier Paradis of Automelodi (who provides a stellar extended remix of the title track to close the album), Nick Rony (mixing), and Bad Faith Actor (bass on “Délire Ou Vide”).
To commemorate the album’s release, we’re honored to premiere the video for the title track, directed by pluri-disciplinary director and frequent collaborator K089. Based in Tio’tia:ke, Montreal and trained in visual arts, they have conceptualized and directed videos working both behind the camera as well as on sets and costumes. They are now working on their first existential horror feature length film.
The video taps into the track’s potency with a series of stark images, futuristic symbols, and engaging performance clips, evoking the glory days of VHS horror and fantasy films. K089 offers a few words about the video’s conception:
I love “Crépuscule.” We worked together on the song for many months. I had the precious feeling that we were touching something we had long been looking for… Laura is someone who inspires me by her deep-rooted integrity. For the video I wanted to focus on her strong and lucid presence. Something of an ode to finding meaning while navigating chaos, to the vivacity of errors, to the process of being present and caring, throughout a maladaptive collage of failing semiotics.
Krieg also expands on the track’s overall themes:
with “Crépuscule” I wanted to explore the imaginary of the end:
a series of images captured at the moment when everything is about to disappear
to explore the space between melancholy and desire.
transcend in a vertical plane
the imminence of collapse
