Well, I live with snakes and lizards
And other things that go bump in the night ‘Cause to me every day is HalloweenOctober might not be for another six months, but that has not stopped Ministry from bringing spooky season to wilt the springtime flowers with the resurrection of their macabre synth classic “(Everyday Is) Halloween,” unveiling a video that’s less nostalgia than necromancy. Al Jourgensen, once the fiercest critic of his early synth-pop days, has returned to desecrate and reconstruct his own ghosts by exuming thee 1984 stand-alone single, and tracks from his first two albums, 1983’s “With Sympathy” and 1986’s “Twitch,” and re-record them for Ministry’s recent LP, The Squirrely Years Revisited, out now on Cleopatra Records.
Directed with a knowing wink, the video for the new version of “(Everyday Is) Halloween” showcases Los Angeles goth influencer Victoria Venin and Deathrocker Malice McMunn, creeping from coffins to disrupt the daylight drudgery of businessmen with playful menace. McMunn, headphones blaring Ministry on a vintage Sony Walkman, splashes them with an ominous black goo—transforming their mundane reality into something appropriately sinister. Elsewhere, the sharp-nailed Elizawitch spins the dark enchantment further, her fingers tracing eerie lines of the black goo across a glowing globe.
Jourgensen himself appears as a spectral, disembodied head, delivering his hypnotic vocals against a serpentine backdrop, intercut with scenes of him commanding a large gothic entourage at a neon-lit warehouse bash—a decadent celebration and tribute to Ministry’s loyal goth fanbase who has stuck by the band from their early synth-pop days to the industrial metal band they mutated into.
