Lotus Thrones and Deeper Graves Release Split Single of Portishead Covers

Post-industrial act Lotus Thrones, a project helmed by multifaceted musician Heath Rave, has teamed up with Jeff Wilson of Deeper Graves for a special split single of Portishead covers.

Deeper Graves, the solo project of Jeff Wilson (Chrome Waves, Wolvhammer, Abigail Williams, etc), recently follow his 2020 debut album Open Roads with his sophomore LP, The Colossal Sleep, which was released on January 28th via his own Disorder Recordings.

“Roads” is a track featured on Portishead’s 1994 Debut album Dummy. For his interpretation, Wilson weaves a soft and dreamy ambiance that infuses a hazy kind of beauty into the song while maintaining the original’s shivering melancholy.

“Cowboys” is the opening track on Portishead’s 1997 self-titled second studio album. For his interpretation, Rave reenvisions the song as an industrial cacophony that cuts slowly through the atmosphere like fingers through cobwebs, all while retaining the original’s jazzy swagger.

On each collaborating on their respective covers, Heath Rave explains:

“While Jeff and I began our relationship playing black metal together in Wolvhammer, it was always the non-metal influences that were what we bonded on. I think you can delve into any of the original material in our respective projects and hear the Portishead influence especially when it comes to arrangements, atmosphere and experimentation.”
