Los Angeles Post-Punk Outfit Agender Debut Video for “Damaged Girls”

In the latest offering from the avant-garde world of Los Angeles post-punk outfit Agender comes a ‘hard-hitting homage to women,’  a powerful tribute to those whimsically termed by the band as the “more complex cuties.”

In “Damaged Girls,” an audacious musical tableau unfolds, conjuring images reminiscent of an industrial dreamscape. Romy Hoffman, not only leading with the guitar, vocals, and synths, is joined by the harmonious Cristy Michel on bass, Sara Rivas weaving magic on synths, and drummer Christy Greenwood masterfully holding the rhythmic pulse as they rattle off a list of tropes.

The drums, punctuated by resonant toms, beat out a rhythm that feels both primal and exacting, while cinematic synths weave an ambient tapestry, plunging listeners into a mesmerizing reverie. Yet, amidst this vast soundscape, it’s the tenacious throb of the driving bass, the cool cadence of the monotone vocals, and the sharp clarity of the cutting guitars that offer a center—a nexus of steely intent and passion. The piece resonates like a mechanized meditation, marrying the introspection of solitude with the relentless drive of machinery.

We’ve certainly heard this minimalistic kind of lyrical ode before from the Beastie Boys and Van Halen, but Agender turns it into an invocation. Good to know there’s still a variety.

You can see them all below…dive deep with them into the realm of the imaginary, where all life has ceased to exist, with the video for Damaged Girls. The clip was shot, directed and edited by Romy Hoffman with extra footage shot by Andrea Kainuma.

Agender will be playing Substance Fest L.A in November, then releasing another single mid November, with a new record to follow in early 2024. Stay tuned for more from this intriguing ensemble.
