More Ephemerol‘s latest release, Last Wave Calling, arrives like a midnight summons on the cusp of some fragile, uncertain dawn, poised delicately between the immediacy of choice and the permanent imprint of consequence. It pulses with an icy urgency that echoes early Depeche Mode, while also capturing the electric interplay of the Human League and the whimsical charm of Turquoise Days. Most notably, the band evokes the avant-garde flair of the legendary French group Martin Dupont, who masterfully intertwine futurist synth lines with the rich warmth of dual vocals—male and female voices dancing together in a bittersweet ballet.
Lyrically, the song thrusts listeners onto a precipice: a crystalline awareness of inevitable transformation, a collective urging to cast off harmful distractions and leave deliberate, meaningful marks on the brief page of existence. Time whispers fiercely through each verse, pressing for clarity and action before opportunity dissolves beneath life’s relentless tides.
Visually, director Chad Fjerstad crafts a black-and-white cinematic vignette that dances precariously between dark humour and suspense. Featuring Jenna Balfe, Dennis Fuller (Donzii), and Gina Kuhn, the video spins a tale sparked by a chance collision, quickly spiraling into paranoia worthy of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. Each frame intensifies the mood, sharpening anxieties and revealing the absurdity lurking behind mundane misfortune.
Last Wave Calling thus emerges as both a meditation and provocation: an evocative audio-visual call-to-arms underscoring our fragile shared destiny, vividly portrayed by More Ephemerol’s distinctive synth-pop allure.
