The charm of Savage Grounds is undeniable. As a series of “goth love protest songs,” the 7-track EP, Hidden By the Night, is a sparkling synth fantasy with vintage machine sounds. Out on She Lost Kontrol March 15th, the EP contains a menagerie of delicate arrangements set to a snappy beat. And this is proven with their track, “All the Tears You Shed.”
The song recalls the minimalistic music of Deux or early Kirlian Camera—danceable and lovable all in one. There is an element of lust found within the layers of synths, further reiterated by the softness of Kleio Thomaïdes’ vocals. However, this is in opposition to its subject matter which is about breaking another’s heart and the sadistic pleasure the narrator derives from that fact. Listen to the song below:
Savage Grounds began in 2014 with Florin Büchel and Daniele Cosmo who focused on techno-based music steeped in acid squelches with their EP, Over Fences. Since then, they’ve added Thomaïdes to the fold, allowing the band to take a new direction towards more song-based compositions. Recorded between Zürich and Geneva in 2020 and 2021, Hidden By the Night is an EP of moods—pain, pleasure, heartache and desire all in one.
