Los Angeles/Brooklyn based vocalist, composer Sondra Sun-Odeon is releasing this Friday her second full-length album “Desyre”—seven bewitching songs that range from empyreal melancholy to doom-laden resolve.
Desyre is the long-awaited follow-up to Sun Odean’s spellbinding 2012 debut release Ætherea.
Much of Desyre was recorded in Brooklyn in 2013 but went abandoned up until now due to a barrage of trauma and depression during a time Sun-Odean describes as “the absolute lowest point in my life.”
For the new album, resurrected through this healing and catharsis, Sun-Odean enlisted Swan’s Thor Harris of SWANS on drums and percussion, with J.R. Bohannon from Ancient Ocean on guitars, and Anthony Piromalli.
In addition to Sun-Odeon recruited Alex DeGroot (Zola Jesus) as engineer and co-producer and began recording the album winter of 2018 at Seahorse Sound Studios in downtown Los Angeles.
Mary Lattimore contributing harp on several tracks including the album’s standout track “Drowning Man: An Invocation for the Demise of Patriarchy”, an epic almost nine-minute long foray into a collective female rage experienced during the Kavanaugh and the peak of the #metoo movement.
The track also includes Cordey Lopez and Matthew Clough-Hunter on gamelan, Lia Simone Braswell (A Place to Bury Strangers) reciting this reimagined 70’s feminist manifesto, with Bohannon’s throat singing, a women’s chorus, evoking a tempestuous sonic journey in the studio that would make both Nick Cave and Warren Ellis blush.
