It’s clear, when listening to Birds’ debut LP, she’s searching for home. But what is home? That’s the question she seeks an answer to in her aptly titled album of the same name.
Home, out on July 26th via Feed The Void, delves into the very process of finding the place where one belongs, the one location in the world that is safe, comfortable and warm. The Rotterdam-based DJ and producer, Katie Wilkinson, recently found herself in turmoil after moving from the UK (where she was born) to The Netherlands—and a tumultuous visa process that ensued. Uprooting her life from one country to another found its way into her music: a consistent theme within her vocals related to being, leaving or returning to the idea of home.
She states: “Home can be so many things….it can be a permanent, it can be temporary, it can be the feeling of surrendering to bad habits, it can be that familiar spot on a dance floor, your favourite seat in a bar, the people you surround yourself with, feeling a sense of freedom, your family base…the possibilities are endless. It’s a word that cannot really be defined.”
“Home,” the first single on the LP, is a step away from the thick, syrupy synthesizer sounds of her previous work but retains all the mysterious allure shrouded in darkness. Driven by a sharp beat, the track is sparse and leaves space for squelchy acid lines that coil around her heavily reverbed vocals. The enunciation of her lyrics—stoic, with a tinge of apathy—are reminiscent of Miss Kittin, while the pacing could be compared to the Swedish duo, The Knife. In its chilly danceability, the song trudges through its weighty acidic groove, a relentless pursuit to find that one thing we all desire: home.
