Connecticut-bred post-punk band Reduction Plan have quickly become one of the most promising acts this side of the Atlantic. The band has been honing their craft with a string of releases and an incredibly powerful live show, opening for a slew of the scene’s best bands. With that in mind, we’re honored to premiere “The River,” the first single from the band’s fourth full-length record (Ae) Maeth. Listen below:
The track begins with an ominous synth line before giving way to incredibly catchy darkwave romp, complete with a driving, slender bass line, pummeling drum machines, chorus-drenched guitars, deliciously sleazy saxophone (courtesy of guest musician Jack Tomascak), and Dan Manning’s weighty croon. On paper, it’s beyond easy to make comparisons to classic Cure by way of Wish and Disintegration, but in this case, the influence is extremely welcome and sounds fresh, rather than pastiche. The track also points toward a much heavier, hazier direction than their previous material, a creative decision that supplement’s the band’s knack for melody with a harder-hitting sonic palette.
The record was engineered and produced Kevin McMahon (Swans, The Walkmen) and also features a guest vocal collaboration with Boy Harsher’s Jae Matthews. (Ae) Maeth is due out on September 20th via Redscroll Records + Dune Altar. Check below for the album artwork, full tracklisting, and be sure to catch the band on tour this summer in New England.
