Life is a Single-Player Game — Philadelphia Shoegazers Cigarettes for Breakfast Debut Video for “Solitaire”

Where I stand
I never thought I’d be again
Even from there
Dissipating tensions in the air

Cigarettes for Breakfast, a shoegaze/dream pop band hailing from Philadelphia, crafts dense soundscapes and raw, emotive, fuzzed-out performances. Known for their ability to channel the moody magic of shoegaze legends like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, they deliver a blend of haze and heartache that’s both nostalgic and fresh. Their live shows are a whirlwind of emotion and energy, capturing the gritty essence of their genre while adding their unique twist – with every chord drenched in reverb, and every lyric tinged with longing.

Solitaire is the first of three singles from Cigarettes for Breakfast’s upcoming album, Slow Motion, slated for a February 2025 release. The track dives into existential dread, grappling with depression, addiction, and societal angst.

Drenched in shoegaze, it mirrors a sense of disillusionment and defeat, a return to a familiar, troubled turf. The lyrics drip with indifference and frustration, conveying a sense of being buried or stuck, haunted by doubts of past failures. Themes of numbing pain and fleeing reality weave through, painting a bleak picture of isolation and solitary struggle.

“Ultimately, life is a single-player game. Solitaire,” quips the band.

The song comes with a DIY, lo-fi tour video that lays bare the gritty camaraderie of the crew and the raw thrill of the road. We see them snaking through mountain ranges, braving rainstorms, and pounding long highways, then crashing in dingy hotel rooms. It’s a glimpse into the highs and lows of life on tour, where every mile reflects the grind and glory of the band’s relentless journey.

Cigarettes For Breakfast is currently working on their second full-length album, Slow Motion, which is set to be released in February of 2025.
