Joy Division’s Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris to celebrate Ian Curtis on 40th anniversary of his death

Joy Division’s Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris are celebrating the life of Ian Curtis during a special streaming event next week on May 18th.

May 18th marks the 40th anniversary of the Jov Division frontman and lyricist taking his own life at the age of 23 on the eve of what was supposed to be the band’s first North American tour.

The free online event, Moving Through the Silence: Celebrating The Life and Legacy of Ian Curtis,  will raise money for the Manchester mental health charity Manchester Mind, and will be hosted by Headstock and DJ/writer Dave Haslam.

The live-stream will occur next Monday, between 8 PM and 10 PM UK time on United We Stream, which will also signal the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week.

This special two-hour event is being billed as “a special evening of music, poetry and conversation to remember the life and legacy of Ian Curtis”, and will feature interviews with New Order‘s Sumner and Morris.

Special guests include The Killers‘ frontman Brandon Flowers, as well as Maxine Peake, and Curtis’ friend Mark Reeder, who infamously booked the Komakino gig for Joy Division in Berlin.

Among those set to perform during the stream are Elbow, LoneLady, the Lottery Winners, and Kodaline, with more participants set to be announced this Friday.
