The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame unveils its latest contenders, a mix of old ghosts and fresh giants vying for a place in its hallowed ranks of the Cleveland instituion. Joy Division and New Order—two bands bound by the same past, torn by fate—stand among fourteen nominees, sharing the ballot with the Black Crowes, Billy Idol, the White Stripes, and Oasis.
“These remarkable nominees have each created their own musical style and attitude impacting generations of music lovers and contributing to the ever evolving sounds and continued growth of Rock & Roll,” read a statement from John Sykes, the chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.
Eligibility for artists to be nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame begins 25 years after their first release. Joy Division and New Order were also nominated in 2023.
In the past, as far as new wave bands are concerned, the Rock Hall of Fame inducted Duran Duran and Eurythmics, while The Go-Go’s and Kraftwerk were part of the Class of 2021. In 2020, the Cleveland institution welcomed Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode, and in 2019, The Cure were inducted alongside Radiohead, Roxy Music, Janet Jackson, and more.
The final announcement of inductees is expected to be announced in late spring following the Rock Hall’s membership votes, with the induction ceremony anticipated to occur sometime during the autumn.
