Italian Post-Punk Outfit God in a Black Suit Debut Nostalgic Video for “Bittersweet”

I feel the cold inside me

Like the dark turns off the day

The wall around is crumbling

And everything is bittersweet.

As the world seemingly descends into madness, chaos and destruction, Italy’s God in a Black Suit unveils a portal back to calmer waters with the release of “Bittersweet,” the first single from their forthcoming full-length album. The song is accompanied by a nostalgic video, telling the story of five kids who find solace in each other’s company. Although lyricist Bruno Pantone’s words are fused with nihilism and adult paranoia, the video serves as memory flashes of more innocent times – a summer’s day at the seaside, watching a small band of misfits pass away the hours roller skating, riding carnival rides, playing arcade games, and sharing a magazine. The juxtaposition is, in fact, bittersweet and brimming with Stranger Things vibes.

We wonder what has come to pass since those halçyon days of youth, when all our futures seemed endless, and instead found our adult selves slamming into brick walls. With this video, we get a chance to backtrack and, perhaps, find a new path of optimism that we may have overlooked.

Experience “Bittersweet” below:

In February 2020, the Matera-based quintet (Annalisa Laterza on bass, Bruno Pantone on guitars, Gianluca Natrella on drums, Matteo Demma on vocals, and Pietro De Ruggieri on synth and keyboards) began crafting the drafts of about ten songs, culminating in releasing their Nails EP on September 9, 2021. The band cites the obvious post-punk, new wave, and darkwave sounds as their main influences, but they are also heavily inspired by krautrock, shoegaze, and indie rock…with their own twist. You can hear elements of Bauhaus, Pixies, Slowdive, and early Siouxsie in their raw guitar sound and rollicking drums, but each track has its own leitmotif of strange sonic effects and interesting vocal direction.
