Irish Alt-Rock Project Def Nettle Debuts Video for “The Pills”

The new project by the prolific Glen Brady, Def Nettle,  debuts a new single entitled ‘The Pills‘. Paying homage to punk, hip-hop, and electro, Brady melds and experiments with sound inspired by his own experience making music in all these genres. Infused into every aspect of Def Nettle’s output are stories and insights that can only be told by someone who has experienced life on the edge…and lived to tell the tale.

For the last three decades, the native Dubliner (by way of New York, Berlin, LA and San Francisco) has worked at the top of his field in DJing, production, engineering, and performance; making music with the likes of R.E.M., Andy Rourke (The Smiths) and the late Dolores O’Riordan (The Cranberries).

‘Def Nettle is me looking in the mirror and seeing the stories of my life and everyone I’ve loved or lost staring back at me, telling me to get on with it,” Brady says. “Make the fucking music. Use your voice. Take advantage of what you’ve learned, what you’ve seen. Over a lifetime of different jobs within the music industry, I would regularly have discussions with myself about the project that is now called Def Nettle. I knew it was coming. I just didn’t know when or how until it revealed itself last year.”

The video for The Pills, a footballer-style chant demanding a chemical escape from the drudgery and sorrow of life, is a dazzling combination of stop motion, bodies drowning in capsules, and pill brands spelled out in their pharmaceutical form.

Formerly known as DJ Wool, Brady won the Irish leg of the DMC World DJ Championships and formed cult Irish band Third Eye Surfers in the 1990s. The band built a solid following in Ireland playing support to the likes of Public Enemy, Jurassic 5 and The Sugarhill Gang. A performer’s credit on R.E.M’s 2001 album Reveal prompted Glen’s move from Ireland to the States.

Landing in New York just two weeks before 9/11, he quickly aligned himself with some of the most exciting indie and electro labels of the early 00s, in particular Plant Music. After a 4 year stint in Berlin releasing DJ Wool records, he settled in San Francisco. When not touring and recording with The Cranberries and D.A.R.K, he was working with the San Francisco Symphony and was licensing music to heavy hitters in the entertainment industry.

Having returned to Ireland, Glen is preparing to release music that is a complete representation of his life and the people he’s met along the way. Def Nettle heralds a new era in Brady’s life and career. This is music that pulls no punches and takes no prisoners. I
