Indonesian Darkwave Act Camlann Debuts Dark Disco Video for “Midnight Euphoria”

Indonesia Dark Disco outfit Camlann returns with their funky new single “Midnight Euphoria”. Originally a trio, founded in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2019, the band has been pared down to the duo of Ony Godfrey on vocals and Fauzan Pratama on Synthesizer.

Previously Camlann had released two goth-heavy albums strongly influenced by Xmal Deutschland, Clan of Xymox, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. However, following the departure of Bassist Bayu Triyudanto, Godfrey and Pratama decided to switch gears and explore disco, funk, and other electronic music elements to capture a lush 70’s-inspired synthesizer sound through the lens of modern darkwave.

‘Midnight Euphoria”, with its glittering darkness, is the captivating first single from Camlann’s forthcoming new album Train to 86th Street. The song is layered in shadowy late 70s and early 80s synth decadence while also marking the station where the band rides the metro towards a new sound and visionone that feels part Grace Jones and part Depeche mode.

On the inspiration on the new sound, Fauzan Pratama explains: ‘After the release of our second album ‘Circa 1983’, Ony and I have been listening to a lot of classic disco and funk from the late 70’s such as Bee Gees, ABBA, Donna Summer and Prince, as well as several late 70’s-early 80’s alternative and electronic artists like Kraftwerk, Saâda Bonaire, YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA, and Marianne Faithfull’s 1979 album, “Broken English”.

Camlann’s new visual style has also dramatically changed while maintaining its stylish darkness. This new aesthetic vision is spearheaded by singer Ony Godfrey’s love for the high fashion/haute couture world, especially vintage 70’s-early 90’s high fashion and designer brands like vintage Chanel, YSL, Halston, and Dior. As she elaborates: “I discovered the designer Theirry Mugler and I watched a lot of his 90’s fashion shows, which sparked a sudden urge on making Camlann’s visual and aesthetic to have the mysterious, daring, elegant, but bold elements that Mugler had on his designs with the vibes that he had on his 90’s haute couture shows. If Ojan (Fauzan) wants to reinvent the sound, why not reinvent the visual and the aesthetic too?”
