I CAN’T HEAR CASSANDRA‘s latest offering and second single, “Out Tonight,” boldly amalgamates the Y2K pop aesthetic with her passion for post-punk and Italo-disco. Proudly describing herself as a “libido-driven” and “unapologetically femme,” she delivers an unmitigated synthpop paean to embracing imperfection and discovering the beauty therein.
For the accompanying music video, ICHC adopted an improvisational approach, with everything falling into place at the eleventh hour. Rather than succumbing to the temptation of producing a myopic “sexy” video, she turned the tables and produced something playful and irreverent.
“I understand that people generally like consistency as it breeds familiarity and something to latch onto,” she asserts. “I love playing into my femme Dom persona, but I don’t like being pigeonholed into anything. I wanted to mess with people’s senses, so I served up the most self-aware and enchanting come-hither-sexy vibe, and then I let it devolve into what I personally find amusing. I gave it permission to be imperfect. Was it a bad decision? Does it matter? Once we stop taking ourselves so seriously, we start having fun. I love learning.”
Both the single and the music video embrace this notion of imperfection, with Cassandra allowing her vocal melodies to flow without the aid of autotune, which adds to the rawness of her self-produced dance track.
Cassandra confides, “I’m pretty sure my mixer deliberately buried every ‘oo yeah yeah yeah’ deep, deep, DEEP in the mix. It’s not as if I intentionally set out to reference Britney Spears! It just came out…”
“Out Tonight” is a deliciously dirty, irresistibly catchy track.
I Can’t Hear Cassandra is the Italo-adjacent dance project of Vanessa Rae Robinson (Sacred Skin), who, under her solo guise, conjures sexy old-school disco grooves that evoke the glitterball fantasies of the late 70s and early 80s.
