Glenn Branca of Theoretical Girls has Passed Away

Glenn Branca, the avant-garde composer and guitarist that was behind legendary NYC no-wave band Theoretical Girls has passed away at the age of 69 years old.

The news broke via social media Monday night through a post from his wife and  musical collaborator Reg Bloor. According to Bloor’s post via Facebook, her husband had “passed away in his sleep last night [May 13] from Throat Cancer.”

In addition to forming Theoretical Girls with Jeffrey Lohn, and releasing his 1981 solo masterpiece The Ascension Branca was also instrumental in the formation of Sonic Youth, introducing his bandmate Lee Ranaldo to Thurston Moore, and later releasing Sonic Youth’s self-titled debut LP and Confusion Is Sex through his Neutral Records label.
