When I look at you
Can see your sad eyes
In search of substance
German post-punk veterans Pink Turns Blue have announced their forthcoming LP, Black Swan, due this February via Orden Records. It’s lead single, “Black Swan (But I Know There Is More to Life),” sets a notably somber yet questioning tone, revealing the band at their most meditative. With a profound sense of introspection, it navigates a landscape of existential uncertainty and quiet defiance—reflecting on the way one’s life might be measured against the elusive contours of meaning, pleasure, and purpose.
The track’s delicate balance of yearning and resignation echoes the group’s Cold War-era roots, evoking the aesthetic geography of a world perpetually on edge. Rather than collapsing into cynicism or empty platitudes, however, Pink Turns Blue invert the lens. Against a backdrop of taut guitars and low-slung rhythms, they search for that which lies beneath the veneer of daily life—the friendships, discoveries, and ephemeral joys that sustain us, as well as the emptiness that lingers when we fail to find them.
“This single is about pondering your goals in life,” explains frontman Mic Jogwer, who speaks with the weary candour of someone who’s spent decades contemplating such questions. “If you think the purpose was to enjoy life – did you do that? If you think your purpose was to be good and make the real world a better place – did you really try? If you think life doesn’t make any sense at all – why did you act like you did? Some encounters and events leave an impression, while others made you aware of the beauty and the wonders this world…Maybe the only thing that really makes you wonder whether there is something divine at all is LOVE. So, did you make efforts to find or give love to someone special, your partner, your parents, kids, or someone in need? Is it good to be good? Is it important to search for something deeper? Or am I just hopeless? Am I trying too hard?”

This new chapter for Pink Turns Blue is anything but static. Since their formation in 1985, the Berlin trio—Mic Jogwer (vocals, guitar), Luca Sammuri (bass), and Paul Richter (drums)—has continually refined their sound into something lean, luminous, and utterly fearless. Early releases like the seminal If Two Worlds Kiss positioned them within a lineage of post-punk innovators—including Joy Division and The Chameleons—but as 2024 draws to a close, their creative vision remains defiantly forward-looking. They continue to chart new sonic territory, crafting music that resonates as profoundly today as it did in those tense final decades of the 20th century.
Black Swan isn’t content to simply balance darkness and hope—it pushes beyond familiar boundaries, transcending the well-worn tropes of “darkwave” to reveal something more expansive. Pink Turns Blue aren’t just drawing on their past; they stand poised at the precipice of an uncertain future, offering a sound at once restless and reflective, at once comforting and challenging.
“Black Swan (But I Know There Is More to Life)” serves as a thoughtful entry point to the new album, providing an emotional anchor for the season and inviting deeper reflection on the legacy we each leave behind.
The new album will be available on limited edition vinyl, CD, and digital formats. Pre-order it here.
