German Avant-Rock Duo Zement Take a Journey on a Sun-Drenched Afternoon in Their Video for “Station to Station”

I need a change from here to there

And you don’t know what it’s like to be me

Feeling free – Am I feeling free?

To be constantly changing

Life offers no clear map, no rhyme or reason—and therein lies its allure: an adventure brimming with twists, turns, and detours, where spontaneity reigns supreme. Unpredictable and unburdened, the journey becomes a vivid celebration of youth and whimsy, each stop brimming with surprise. The thrill lies in embracing the unknown, wandering without a guide, letting your spirit roam as the day unfolds in shimmering, unexpected splendor.

This essence pulses through Station to Station, the latest single from Zement—Philipp Hager and Christian Büdel’s experimental brainchild. Zement brews a heady mix of Neo-Krautrock, Neo-Psychedelia, Noise-Rock, and electronic beats with a wild free jazz heart. Guitars growl, synths shimmer, and drums drive an unstoppable rhythm. Drawing from the robotic reverie of Kraftwerk and the hypnotic hum of Neu! and CAN, they craft music that teeters between bygone eras and future dreams. Fuzzy guitars, cosmic sax, surreal vocals, and pounding drums create a curious, compelling concoction.

Their upcoming album Passagen, set for release through Berlin’s Crazysane Records on February 14, 2025, tells the tale of a restless soul’s pilgrimage to rediscover and reshape both self and society. Station to Station boldly captures that yearning, navigating new places and uncharted hopes. With lyrics steeped in irony and sly commentaries on modern masculinity, Zement explores the off-kilter, the crooked, the sense that something is just slightly out of place.

The accompanying video, directed by Zement and Jan Kretschmer, is a carefree frolic through a sun-soaked afternoon. The band leaps from playgrounds to shimmering lakes, golden fields, and skateboarding escapades, even romping with ponies. We have no idea what’s going on or where we’re headed next – but isn’t that part of the fun, after all?

Watch the video for “Station to Station” below:

Passagen unfolds as a concept work where words, for the first time, hold wider sway in Zement’s saga. Influenced by the musings of Mark Fisher and Walter Benjamin, this latest offering spins the tale of a soul on the cusp of change—longing for new lands, a new self, a life not marred by bitterness. Questions bubble, unyielding, about this strange world we inhabit.

Just for a moment—a fleeting night, an hour, the span of a song—the music conjures a glimpse of a future worth living. Zement’s melodies carve out a brief utopian refuge, a shimmering now, where hope lingers and dreams breathe. From this space, new thoughts spark, conversations ignite, and feelings resonate, humming in shared company. Together, it suggests, we can continue seeking, speaking, and feeling—refusing to let the world’s grayness swallow our shared yearning for something brighter.
