French Darkwave Duo Echoberyl Face an Apparition from The Past in their Video for “Fading Away”

The Parisian duo, Echoberyl, introduces their haunting new single, “Fading Away.” This track delves deep into the psyche, teetering on the brink of reason, yearning for a genuine connection in a world of shifting realities and timeless moments. Drawing inspiration from The Twilight Zone, it explores the eerie notion of encountering someone believed to be gone forever.

The coldwave/EBM composition by Cecilia Dassonneville and Adriano Iacoangeli is enveloped in a misty ambiance. Whispers within the track hint at eternal love or perhaps perpetual sorrow. Dassonneville’s melodious voice narrates the poignant story, while the song skillfully juxtaposes melancholic tones with catchy hooks and theremin outbursts. A segment of the track features drifting guitar strums, adding a touch of vintage charm that contrasts with the pulsating synth rhythms.

A recurring theme in the song poses a heartfelt question: Do the memories and sensations of a loved one persist, or are they just figments of longing? Perhaps love and insanity are merely two facets of the same emotion.

Accompanying visual for “Fading Away” is a mesmerizing self-directed monochrome video. Under dim lamplights, it depicts a woman’s encounter with a ghostly figure. The gripping hook of the song aligns perfectly with the eerie visuals, driving the story forward with deep emotion and tangible suspense. Echoberyl’s artistry is influenced by renowned figures like director Yann Gonzales, animator Michel Ocelot, and comic genius-director Enki Bilal, who have all left indelible sci-fi imprints on the duo’s work.

Echoberyl’s inception was in 2018, and it wasn’t long before they released their evocative debut album, Apparition,” under the Swiss Dark Nights label. This was followed by their second full-length, The Awakening of a Mutant Girl, in 2020, courtesy of Cold Transmission Records. By 2021, the duo took control of their narrative, launching their own label and releasing “Mother Solitude and Other Dark Tales,” further enriching their musical journey.

At their essence, Dassonneville and Iacoangeli captivate listeners with riveting tales set to the rhythmic beats of their songs. Their repertoire is a collection of alluring, eerie, and sensual depictions of femininity, each reflecting the zeitgeist and the journeys we undertake.
