Fotocrime Channel Irresistible Post-Punk Power in New Single “Cautious”

Since their inception in 2018, Louisville, Kentucky-based post-punk project Fotocrime has recorded a rather sizable body of work, including four LPs and a handful of singles. On this Bandcamp Friday, Fotocrime has released a brand-new single “Cautious” b/w a powerful cover of Big Black’s “Crack Up.” A live favorite and arguably Fotocrime’s heaviest song to date, “Cautious” features contributions from members of Modern Life Is War and Shitfire alongside a pair of distorted bass guitars, thunderous drum machine programming, and frontman Ryan Patterson’s churning guitars & synths behind his striking, gritty baritone. Fans of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Rose of Avalanche, and The Jesus Lizard should find much to love in Fotocrime’s turbulent energy.

While in the past, Fotocrime’s work balances power with infectious melody, Patterson is intentionally steering this new track into more fervent territory. “While I’ve loved delving into the softer side of my songwriting — and I’m sure I will go down that path from time to time — with ‘Cautious,’ I felt a strong pull to swing the hammer a bit harder than on any past Fotocrime song,” he says.

The digital B-side to “Cautious” is a cover of Big Black’s “Crack Up,” a deep cut that was originally released on the 1986 compilation Gods Favorite Dog. The cover serves as a fitting tribute to Steve Albini, who passed away last May. The cover features Albini friends and frequent collaborators Dahm Majuri Cipolla (Mono, Phantom Family Halo) on drums and Jeff Mueller (Rodan, June of 44, Shipping News) on bass, along with Patterson on vocals/guitar and his brother Evan Patterson (Young Widows, Jaye Jayle) on guitar. All proceeds from the sale of the Big Black cover will be donated to Albini’s Letters To Santa charity.
