Florida Neo-Psych Post-Punk Ensemble Liquid Pennies Debut Video for “Name Dropper”

To observe with clarity it seems you lie and swerve
Kept ties forming lines you air
Observing nothing much

St Petersburg, Florida, is the home of Liquid Pennies, an avant-garde ensemble known for blending neo-psych with post-punk dynamism. The band, comprised of Chas Binns (vocals, guitar, synth), Dylan Carney (bass), and the percussive powerhouse of Whicker and Jones, constantly stirs their diverse influences into new, exhilarating experiences. Now they’re all abuzz with the release of their latest music video, Name Dropper, a visual escapade as lively and sprightly as the band’s distinctive rhythmic pulse and as electrifying as their sound.

Name Dropper does not tiptoe around the band’s creative frontiers; it leaps over them with the grace of a ballet dancer and the energy of a quasar. The track’s vibrant fuzz-tone distortion is akin to a sonic bulldozer, cheerfully laying waste to everything in its wake. And then, as if that weren’t enough, it unfurls melodic hooks with the casual flair of a magician pulling rabbits out of a hat.

But the real showstopper? The dual drums. They absolutely smash, creating a rhythmic rumble that you can feel resonating through the soles of your shoes. It’s as if the band decided to turn each beat into a seismic event, leaving listeners with the distinct sensation that the ground beneath their feet might just give way to the groove.

In the video, Liquid Pennies showcases their musical chops with a depth of artistic flair. A dash of Osees here, a sprinkle of Ty Segall there, mixed with the robust flavours of Melvins and Frankie & The Witchfingers. The band fuses inspiration from the greats with their own unique zing, creating something that’s both familiar and wonderfully offbeat.

A notable highlight of the video is the introduction of Liquid Pennies’ new dual drummer lineup, which elevates their sound to unprecedented levels as well as showcases director Matthew Wickham’s kaleidoscopic visionary expertise. Fans of neopsych and alternative rock can look forward to an immersive experience as Liquid Pennies takes them on a wild ride. Name Dropper is a high-octane hit of heavy psych and robust stoner rock that demands to be played loud (ear safety notwithstanding).

Liquid Pennies emerged in 2018 as a musical melting pot.Their self-produced debut in 2019, Floods, was a crafty blend of analogue warmth and digital clarity. Zoë Turtle joined the ensemble in 2020, bringing her violin and vocals into the mix for the creation of Secrets Dash, an indie-produced gem.

2021’s Distant Dawn, recorded with Nathan Doyle, marked a mature step in their evolution, followed by a prolific 2022. That year, they released the raw D.E.  EP and the ambitious Any Wonder, an hour-long journey with a parade of guest musicians.

2023 started with A Wake-Ending, a showcase of the band’s live energy and intricate craftsmanship, honed on East Coast tours. Then, in a bold move, they added dual drummers Pierson Whicker and Casey Jones in June, infusing their sound with a new, heavy, and controlled rhythmic energy.
