GIIRLS, the Parisian dark synthwave enigma, returns with the project’s latest single, “Obscurity,” a track that delves into the depths of Synthwave and Electro, blending the atmospheric essence of the ’80s with a modern edge, drawing inspiration from legendary acts such as The Cure, Trisomie 21, Kavinsky, and The Soft Moon.
This new single sets the stage for GIIRLS’ upcoming album, Time of Glass, due out on September 13th. It promises a shift where vocals take center stage, particularly in collaborations with artists like RENDEZ-VOUS, MODERN MEN, and DEAD, opening up new musical horizons for the project.
“Obscurity” captivates with whispered vocals that resonate like distant dreams, supported by a pulsing bass synth foundation. Piercing synths weave an eerie melody, creating a brooding and ominous atmosphere that gradually unveils a shimmering brightness, looming like the embers of hope glowing in the enveloping darkness.
For the “Obscurity” music video, GIIRLS collaborated with the talented Mickael Auffret, crafting a visual narrative imbued with the surreal qualities reminiscent of David Lynch’s most nightmarish moments in Twin Peaks. The video’s focus on a fiery red and black aesthetic, with imagery of burning objects and dark, enigmatic scenes, perfectly complements the song’s dual lyrical meanings and resonates with the current global zeitgeist.

GIIRLS is not quite the typical synthwave project but an exploration of atmospheric soundscapes by a musician with roots in DEAD and FTR (EX-FUTURE). Straying from the roots of Noise and Shoegaze but keeping them within reach, the use of synthesizers has opened new avenues for composition and musical expression. Drawing from a deep appreciation for movie soundtracks and bassline sounds, GIIRLS’ music is a dynamic fusion of atmosphere, rock, and EBM influences.
“Obscurity” is now available for pre-saving here, setting the tone for the forthcoming release of the “Time of Glass” LP on September 13th, 2024.
