Ex-Lush Supergroup Piroshka Debut their Fantastic Dreampop track “Everlastingly Yours”

From the ashes of beloved shoegaze band Lush’s short lived reunion singer Miki Berenyi has returned in a new supergroup that recently teased. The new band called Piroshka is an allstar dreampop ensemble graced with the talents of KJ “Moose” McKillop of the band Moose—who whose review in sounds infamously coined the term “shoegaze”.  If that were not impressive enough, also included is the lineup is Mick Conroy of classic 4Ad post-punk band, Modern English, and Justin Welch of Elastica.

Their new song “Everlastingly Yours” is awash in early 90s nostalgia whose candy flossed guitars soften the biting lyrics that do indeed shatter bones with a smile.

“Everlastingly Yours” is included Piroshka’s debut album Brickbat. That appropriately arrives during the aftermath of Valentines on February 15th via Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde’s long running label Bella Union.

“We didn’t want Piroshka to sound anything like any of our old bands,” says Mick Conroy. “When Miki sings, you can’t get away from Lush, but for me, we sound like four people exploring and having fun, knuckling ideas into shape, trying to make them sound new and different.”

When Lush reunited, Justin Welch filled in on drums, as original drummer Chris Acland has passed away in 1996,  with Mick Conroy also enlisting as a last minute replacement of bassist Phil King.

Lush would with this lineup would perform their final show in Manchester Academy 1, on November 25th, 2016. Ingredients already there, Lush’s dissolution quickly leavened new ideas ultimately giving rise to Piroshka.

“After the Manchester show, Justin asked if I’d be up for something else,” Berenyi explains. “But I’d never made music outside of Lush, and I’ve never wanted to do anything solo. I have trouble with self-belief, I need someone else to motivate me, and in this case, it was Justin. He sent drum tracks with guitar parts and odd words, so I wrote some vocals and lyrics… When Mick added bass, it sounded great. When Moose added guitar and keyboards — I’d never written like that before, it was such good fun.”
