Dutch Darkwave act Cymbaline pay Homage to Godfrey Reggio in “Walking Sleeptalking”

Dutch darkwave band Cymbaline has unveiled the video for their new single “Walking Sleeptalking”. Hailing from Utrecht, in the Netherlands, Cymbaline’s music draws heavily on the classic post-punk era of the late ‘70s-early ‘80s. By utilizing vintage synthesizers and drum machines, the band the rawness and bleak coldness of grey industrial cities, invoking the underlying melancholia that is associated with this period.

This feeling is even more emphasized in their music video, for which they used old, grainy images of Utrecht in the ’70s and ’80s. The music video is an ode to the city as well as a big nod to the 1982 experimental film Koyaanisqatsi, directed by Godfrey Reggio.

Watch the video for “Walking Sleeptalking” below:

In their current icarnation, Cymbaline have been performing for about a year and a half. They had previously released the two singles ‘Nicht Weiter Als Berlin‘ and ‘Mean Bobby‘, which both received national and international attention.. Sadly, this year the band has had to cancel most of their shows, but this hasn’t impacted their creative process. The release of ‘Walking Sleeptalking’ only marks the beginning of more to come.
