Nugaze Act Revolution Above Disorder Pays Tribute to Post-Punk Heroes TV Personalities with “Scream Quietly”

Nugaze act Revolution Above Disorder, the solo guise of Vancouver-based Dubliner Stephen Nicholas White (The Orange Kyte, House of Dolls, Magic Shoppe) has unveiled his cover of post-punk heroes Television Personalities’ “Scream Quietly”.

This classic song made originally made its appearance on TV Personalities’ 1982 second studio album Mummy You’re Not Watching Me. This RAD cover of the song made its debut on the compilation named after the album, ‘Mummy, Mummy Please Look At Me: A Tribute to the Television Personalities’, released via Dandy Boy Records last year.

With his haunting cover of “Scream Quietly”, Stephen Nicholas White fused a melange of post-punk, psychedelic rock, and minimal synth accents, and soft reverbed vocals, to create a thoughtful and introspective take on the songwriting genius of Dan Treacy. With this interpretation, White transmutes the essence of the song into a new dreamlike atmosphere perfect for a drive down a lonely highway during the most secluded hours of the night.

Elaborating on his love for the work of TV Personalities’ Dan Treacy, White explains:

“The lofi outsider-art indie-pop of Dan Treacy’s Television Personalities occupies a place in my heart all of its own. Stylistically all over the map, Treacy’s four decades (and counting) of off-kilter demonstrations of punk and psychedelia are held together by the emotional depth of the songwriting and the vocal delivery, which sees Treacy careering unconstrained from acerbic, to playfully whimsical, to heartbroken and vulnerable. Beautiful”.

As a project, Revolution Above Disorder recently made its debut in October of 2021 with the single release of Illuminate, a 3-track offering including a remix and acoustic version that was produced, mixed, and mastered at Jacknife Sound by new wave auteur Jason Corbett of ACTORS. Illuminate also features all other members of ACTORS’ (Shannon Hemmett and Kendall Wooding on backing vocals, Adam Fink on drums) and Josiah Webb of Magic Shoppe on guitar.  The brilliantly shot video, directed and edited by Eliot Galán of Galán Films, stars Analissa Longoria and Mat Durie. Dublin-based artist Delta Omega a.k.a. Conor Paxton (House of Dolls, Buffalo Sunn, The Brothers Movement) also contributed to a more dance-oriented remix of the song.

The song itself, “Illuminate”, is a dream-laden psychedelic groove, sighing with cinematic vocals over a soft wall of shuddering sound that weaves guitars and synths around a hypnotic melody.
