Los Angeles dream pop grrrl group Taleen Kali unleashed a spooky new single and slow-motion bloodbath of a video just in time for Halloween: “Only Lovers Left Alive,” out now via Dum Dum Records (produced by Smashing Pumpkins’ Jeff Schroeder).
If Siouxsie and the Banshees had miraculously cut a record with Pixies, or Bikini Kill collaborated with Curve, you’d have Taleen Kali’s general sound. This particular track moves into the realms of 90s Brit and Dream Pop, as if Debbie Harry herself crossed the Atlantic to meld her voice with Toni Halliday’s.
“Only Lovers Left Alive is about finding connection despite all odds,” says the artist. “I wrote this song while walking through the deserted streets of LA during the early pandemic. There was nobody in sight, I hadn’t seen another human being for days, and I imagined what would happen if there was only one other person left alive in the world.
If the title seems familiar – the song pays homage to the classic vampire movie. “For the visual we wanted to create something special for spooky season that also pays homage to vampire tropes, plus a bloody twist at the end just in time for Halloween!”
Good times. Watch your neck and watch the video, directed by Joe Rubinstein:
