Doom Pop Scrolling — Trigger Discipline Takes a Swipe at TikTok in their Video for “Babble Babble Babble”

Scrolling through TikTok is an excellent time waster, but is the onslaught of superficiality good for our souls? Does the infinite swipe give us useful life hacks, or is it all just a new means of conformity? In their new offering, “Babble Babble Babble,” Trigger Discipline immediately advises us to “delete the internet.” Easier said than done. Hailing from the dark depths of the notorious Massachusetts Bridgewater Triangle, Alyssa Gallagher and Jae Yahkèl decided to toss their hats in the late capitalist doom squad ring with this deceptively cheery synthpop number.

Trigger Discipline is on a mission to “confront a devastated world with calculated restraint, the album’s music and lyrics navigate existential dread with impassioned urgency and earnest honesty.” Recorded in the hallowed halls of Abbey Road Studios, “Babble Babble Babble” is not merely an electronic music ditty; it could very well be some kind of synth-pop sorcery. With a hook so catchy, one might ruefully jest that it’s cursed – for it seems destined to dance in your thoughts, uninvited, for days and nights without end. Prepare your soul; resistance is, as they say, futile.

Their video for the song is a picture-perfect lampooning of influencers, makeup tipsters, wellness quacks, vain goth girlies, lifestyle enthusiasts, and anyone else thirsty for their fifteen minutes. Channeling Altered Images with a splash of Strawberry Switchblade…and the biting social commentary of the Boomtown Rats or Heaven 17…this synthpop gem is whip-smart satire cloaked in sugary sweet vocals and rhythms, designed to lull you into an obedient stupour. (In fact, we may need to summon the ghosts of Aldous Huxley and George Orwell.)

Watch the video for “Babble Babble Babble” below:

Alex Garcia-Rivera (American Nightmare, Cold Cave, Vundabar) lends his hand with production, touching upon the regal notes of Vivaldi and the raw edges of My Bloody Valentine. Imagine a world where Public Enemy waltzes with Prince, and Björk whispers secrets in the shadows. Dubbing it “gothspel”, it’s an ethereal mix of moody anthems, every track dripping with thought-provoking verses, celestial guitar strains, and dance beats.

Alyssa Gallagher and Jae Yahkèl Estes have already performed alongside some heavy hitters, including their first-ever shows being a mini-tour with shoegaze legends, The Veldt. Their live shows, often described as “unhinged,” caught the attention of Cocteau Twins’ Simon Raymonde, who is now managing the duo and has brought them into the Bella Union family. They have also played with Urban Heat, House of Harm, and Korine, as well as at Soft Kill’s record release show.

On New Year’s Day, they performed an acoustic set at Stonehenge, which you can watch here:

Trigger Discipline will be performing across the UK this month.
