Delerium Debuts Video for Clan of Xymox’s Haunting Darkwave Remix of “In The Deep” Featuring Kanga

Legendary electronic music duo Delerium—the brainchild of Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber (of industrial stalwarts Front Line Assembly)—has always stood apart with their lush, ethereal soundscapes. Where Front Line Assembly harnesses gritty machine rhythms and searing aggression, Delerium embraces melody, spirituality, and ambient exploration. Now, in a compelling new collaboration, Delerium teams up with Dutch darkwave icons Clan of Xymox for a gripping new take on In The Deep, a standout track from Delerium’s 2023 album Signs. With LA-based artist KANGA lending her sultry vocals and evocative lyrics, the remix plunges deeper into darker territory, adding fresh intensity to the original’s ethereal core.

Released under the banner of alternative powerhouse Metropolis Records, In The Deep continues Delerium’s tradition of lush, downtempo soundscapes. Signs—produced and mastered by Greg Reely—boasts stellar vocal contributions from talents like Mimi Page, Inna Walters, Phildel, and Emily Haines (of Metric).

“A while back—like months ago—we had some remixes done from our latest Delerium album. All of the remixes were released except this one by Clan of Xymox,” says Bill Leeb. “It was the perfect fit for a song about loss and the overwhelming pull of grief…This was the first time we worked with KANGA, who wrote the lyrics and sang this song. This is a very personal outlook and moving performance from KANGA, yet hopeful in the end. This is also our first time working with Ronny Moorings (Clan of Xymox). As luck would have it, we are label mates on Metropolis Records, which helped immensely to get things rolling.”

The remix unfolds like a tide, merging the atmospheric precision of Delerium with the haunting darkwave essence of Clan of Xymox, plunging the listener into the profound depths of melancholic beauty. With intricate layers swirling like currents and an intensity that pulses like the heartbeat of the ocean, this work transcends mere reinterpretation—it is an evolution, a siren’s call echoing through the abyss. This collaboration is a testament to the magic that happens when powerful forces converge beneath the surface, creating waves of sound that resonate long after they recede.

Tim Hill’s accompanying video takes the aquatic themes of Delerium’s In The Deep and amplifies them into a swirling, surreal spectacle. Blending dreamlike vignettes with striking visuals from longtime collaborators Carylann Loepkky and Matt Lombard, the video feels both fluid and feverish, pulling the viewer into its hypnotic current.

“We were looking for a more ethereal darkwave sound so we approached them and really got the result we were looking for – to keep in mood with the song and its more complex somber aspect,” says Leeb. “Tim Hill provided the ethereal visionary video ambience, setting the right mood.”

Delerium, the brainchild of Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber, emerged in 1987 as a side project for sonic exploration, veering away from the industrial intensity of Front Line Assembly (where both made their mark) and Skinny Puppy (where Leeb had an early hand). Initially, it was a playground for dark ambient trance and instrumental experimentation, but Delerium quickly transcended its origins, evolving into a full-fledged phenomenon with its unique blend of ethereal atmospherics and electronic pop.

By 1994’s Semantic Spaces, Delerium had hit their stride, pairing lush production with high-profile collaborations that elevated them into the electronic stratosphere. Their roster of vocalists reads like a who’s who of musical brilliance: Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer), Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), Emily Haines (Metric), and more. Silence, featuring Sarah McLachlan, became a global smash, soaring to #1 across charts and cementing its place as a trance anthem, with Tiësto’s remix hailed among the greatest dance tracks of all time.

Today, Delerium’s legacy remains alive and well. Their label, Metropolis, recently released Leeb’s debut solo album, Model Kollapse, enlisting Jason Corbett and Shannon Hemmett of ACTORS and longtime collaborator Mimi Page, proving Delerium’s creative currents continue to flow strong.
