Darvaza Wave Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of The Crow’s Cinematic Release with “Crow’s Tears”

Buildings will burn and then… ashes up, they will fly. Real love will last forever, we will reunify
Come in my hug and feel, it can’t be raining all the time… I was no more a child, when I was told I’ll die

Thirty years ago today, the shadowy comic book adaptation of The Crow first graced US cinemas, swiftly becoming a defining emblem in the dark-gothic realm. The Crow etched itself into our collective psyche with an indelible mark, painted in the deep hues of mourning for Brandon Lee’s tragic passing and the inky black of the Crow’s wings. The Crow – the ferryman; a modern-day Charon, guides us between the worlds of the living and the dead—two realms that might not be as distant as they seem. Darvaza Wave’s new single, Crow’s Tears, stands as a tribute to this iconic character, honoring both Lee and the legacy he left behind.

The Crow is revenge, power, infinite love that goes beyond the border between life and death,” says the band. “It is the music of a distorted guitar that, during a rainy night, spreads from a dark city roof, with its waves acting as a warning to enemies, but at the same time filling friends with a new strength, a feeling being too strong to be mortal: the true love, the one which will last for eternity. This for us is the essence of Eric Draven, this for us is the essence of Brandon Lee, this for us is the essence of The Crow.

Amidst encircling darkness and seething anger, the lyrics speak of tears and fury, invoking truth and rebirth through the Black Crow. Embracing inevitable mortality, they promise eternal love and reunion. Vowing vengeance, they echo Eric’s resolve, transforming anguish into power, heralding a rebirth through the crow’s unyielding spirit.

The dark-gothic rock ensemble draws its lifeblood from Italy, Denmark, and Finland. Darvaza Wave’s sound, a creature born from the depths of post-punk, new wave, and electronic influences (think Type O Negative), was summoned into existence in Northern Italy in 2015. Within this band, Luca Zaniboni’s voice and effects serve as the guiding spirit, while his studio bass anchors their recordings. Saverio Turetta’s guitar weaves haunting melodies, Claudio Zurlo’s keyboards and studio bass create a haunting resonance, and Riccardo Franzoi’s drums, effects, and studio bass pulse with a disciplined fervor. Andrea Privato’s live bass holds their stage presence together like a binding spell.

As they have grown, Darvaza Wave (aptly named after the Persian term for the ‘door of hell’) has taken on the martial precision of drums and bass, combined with the ethereal presence of keyboards, the raw power of guitars, and the enigmatic touch of electronic elements. The result is music that strikes with both force and subtlety, weaving moments of raw energy with passages that are almost dreamlike. In recent years, their sound has been deeply influenced by the gothic traditions of Scandinavia, a reflection of the cold, dark lands where two of their members now make their home.

Darvaza Wave released this song as a response to the remake’s trailer, which they observe as having been rewritten according to new standards of beauty, less in tune with the reality of the world.

“We believe that the trailer for the new film may appear in some ways irreverent to those fascinated by the dark and gothic world,” they admit. “This might give a strong, almost aberrant feeling of discord to those who made the original version a sort of inspiration for life. But we think this is natural for every remake of every cult movie: we will learn to see it simply as a totally new film, different and dissociated from the original.”

They explain that they wanted to maintain a closeness to the aesthetic canon of the 90s as a nod to its cultural importance and their own artistry.

Mattia Martini (aka Chus), an Italian artist living in Scandinavia, created the cover for the single’s artwork. Listen to “Crow’s Tears” below:

Formed in 2015 as ‘Darvaza’, Darvaza Wave’s debut EP, “Truth,” dropped in 2018. Their single “Life is Unfair” featured a video produced by Envyda. Their 2020 track “Bastion” was paired with an award-winning, fan-made video showcasing global pandemic solitude. The same year, “Sleep Like My Soul” told of an astronaut’s last dance in space, visualized by artist Jack Malombra.

In 2021, they released “The World (of the Elder Things),” confronting inner fears, with a video inspired by Patrick Fogli’s novel and created by Envyda and ExFormat Movie using “Unreal Engine.” Their 2022 EP, “Bastion Knights,” in collaboration with L.A.’s Crunchpod, traverses Nordic battles and Greek revelations, featuring a “Bastion” remix by STRANGER DREAMS & MNFCTR.

In a nod to The Chameleons, Darvaza Wave joined “Script of the 40th Bridge”, an official Italian tribute marking the 40th anniversary of the seminal album Script of the Bridge.
