Buzz Kull unleashes a synth-driven stunner: “Rise From Your Grave,” the first offering from the project’s forthcoming new album Fascination (out November 25 via Avant!).
“Rise from your grave” is a phrase gleaned from the 1988 SEGA arcade and Genesis game, Altered Beast. With a nod to Front 242, Front Line Assembly, and Cabaret Voltaire, the high-paced, throbbing dance track dwells in the sinister fog of fraught personal experience.
Buzz Kull’s brooding darkness and experimental nature take centre stage with this track. There is a sharp ear for pop composition, amongst the smog of murky new wave. Despite the frenzy of beats and buzzing frequency, the mastermind behind the project, Sydney-based musician Marc Dwyer, administers a very human delivery. This is masterfully illustrated by director Joel Burrows for the accompanying video, which was filmed through layers of glass and broken television sets and spliced with macro shots of entwined, serpentine cables.
“As a performance artwork, it’s very simple,” says Burrows. “It leans into Marc’s natural performance; a battle between conservative release and repression…Seeing cables lying around on the floor always reminded me of the images of synthwaves. It’s almost a metaphor of an audio death, a funeral pyre. Marc’s body is filmed so many times that it becomes destroyed and turned into ghost-like images.”

Fascination was written between 2019 and 2021. At the tail of 2021, Buzz Kull, who had recently returned to Sydney amid lockdown, sequestered himself to his bedroom and completed the album, with final production from Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts/Liars).
Fascination is out on November 25th via Avant!.
