In the darkened streets of Vancouver’s lively underground music scene, a post-industrial/darkwave duo known as Wire Spine emerged in 2015. The electric combination of Robert Katerwol from Weird Candle and the enigmatic Jesi Tekahionwake conceived a sound filled with brooding beats, dark melodies, and haunting synth leads. Drawing inspiration from digital and analog synthesizers and drum machines, they conjured a soundscape reminiscent of the building anxiety of being lost without the hope of salvation. Jesi’s lyrics, though cryptic, are delivered with a raw and unapologetic edge.
More than half a decade has passed since the post-punk world was captivated by the pulsating rhythms of “Burn Me” from Wire Spine’s sophomore record, Bury Me Here. The wait has been lengthy, but their return promises to be triumphant. Enter “Safe,” the duo’s latest release. However, don’t let the title fool you – the song feels far from ‘safe.’ This spectral darkwave marvel offers a fog-laden embrace of dry ice clinging to the dancefloor, echoing vintage vibes with modern sensibilities. Imagine a collaboration between Cabaret Voltaire and Soma Holiday, orchestrated in a haunted mansion by an eccentric millionaire played by Vincent Price. And if this is an ominous harbinger of things to come, anticipation for their third studio album has just heightened.
