What happens when you lose your identity for the sake of pleasing a significant other? Dark electronic music outfit More Is Not Enough introspectively explores this inner conflict with their latest single, “Devils Speak.” Infusing various elements of 80s synth, post-punk, and coldwave into the wrenching emotional lyrics, we hear elements of Depeche Mode, Tuxedomoon, and Aztec Camera in their sound – staccato synths, spooky synth choral vocals, and frenetic drumming.
Devils Speak is a haunting composition, with its ethereal Vangelis-inspired electronic soundscapes. The lyrics speak to the experience of wandering aimlessly through existence, surrendering oneself to the sway of a lover’s influence, and finding oneself in treacherous, uncharted territories – all in the name of appeasing their desires. This perilous journey can lead to self-destruction and causing harm to those around you, for one may falsely believe that their significant other is their salvation. A cautionary tale indeed.
In a bittersweet turn of events, the video for More Is Not Enough serves as the swansong for the group as a duo. Captured by the skilled hands of Synister Katalyst Production and deftly edited by founding member Pedro Lopez, is a testament to the power of minimalism. The thoughtful performance is elevated by the enigmatic presence of a muse, whose ethereal presence adds an air of mystique.
